In the UK, there are currently no legal requirements to obtain IPAF certification to work from heights. Many employers, however, will insist that workers are conversant with working at height health and safety regulations and have undergone appropriate training. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 state that it is an employer’s responsibility to ensure that all employees who work at height are either competently trained or supervised by a skilled and experienced person.

When you want to ensure on-site health and safety regulations are consistently met, IPAF courses are a great way to do this. Persons of 16 years or older are eligible to attend IPAF training courses. Upon completion of a course, they will receive an IPAF PAL (Powered Access License) card which will be valid for five years from first issue.

Advantages of IPAF training

Having completed an IPAF training course provides two main advantages. Workers who hold an IPAF PAL card will be more employable and find it easier to find work. Most importantly, IPAF training courses teach attendees how to work at height in a safe way. Any working from height scenario involves the risk of serious accident or even death. IPAF training is designed to limit risk and promote safe practices when working from height.

Some other benefits and advantages of completing an IPAF training course include:

  • Correct and safe usage of a platform
  • Safe usage of harnesses and protective equipment
  • Understanding of working at height machinery
  • Risk assessment processes
  • Emergency procedures
  • Hazard recognition
  • Safe assembly, usage, and dismantling of access platforms

As you can see, IPAF training is extremely beneficial and can ensure that you are as safe as possible when working at height.
